Caring Needs

Message from Rev. Lori

Hello Good People,

Dont Stay In Your Seats!  Worship Ministry Team chooses titles way ahead of schedule based on themes, important UU occasions and interfaith holidaysI We weave in topics important to our community and to justice, mercy, and love. I am regularly reminded of how strongly and deeply the spirit moves when a title and a theme address what is going on in our world as closely as it does this week.  It invites me to knit together our principles and values with life as we know it.  And here we are.

We are a faith community, even if we come from different faiths or no faith.  We walk together and support one another on our own individual spiritual journeys.  Faith without action is incomplete. Spiritual journey without witness is vacant.  It is important to practice our spirituality in the ways that nourish ourselves and our community.  And our spirituality also requires we look outward. Our spiritual call in this moment is to stay awake. To support affected communities and individuals where possible. To hold injustice up into the light and not be resolved to a norm that tears families apart and scares people from leaving their homes.  To feed people, shelter people, lighten their loads.  Not staying in our seats means making Love real. Love being our core and motivating force. Join me this weekend for worship.  Stand up with me for some kit making, peanut butter sandwich making and to process what is happening in our community!

Let us reflect on these words:

Dont Stay In Your Seats means to:

  • Rise in love.

  • Rise in courage.

  • Rise in solidarity.

  • Rise in hope.

Read those lines out loud and in your head.

What word or line stands out for you?

Take a deep breath and say that word or line.  Hold it in your minds eye.

Ask it what it is saying to you in th.

And may we rise together.  See you Sunday!

Peace and Blessings,

Rev Lori Whittemore

Saco Biddeford Kit Making for the Unhoused

This Sunday, January 25th, you can join this group of happy kit makers at 5 p.m: We will be making kits AND PB&J sandwiches at the church.

Please bring: loaves of bread, peanut butter, jelly to church on Sunday morning or after 4:30 on Sunday and hang around to help us assemble.!

We are also still collecting: hats, gloves, chapsticks, handwarmers, socks, soft snacks, candy/  (chocolate or lollipops)

We will set up two tables to collect the other items in the parish hall.  These, plus all that have already been assembled, plus all the other items will be distributed on Monday and Tuesday when the count of the unhoused is done.

Ongoing activities

Share the Plate: January

Each month, UUCSB chooses an organization to split weekly donations made by congregants during the course of Sunday services. As many of you attend virtually, we are providing an online venue for these donations.

This month, we ask for donations to be split between UUCSB's general fund and The Seeds of Hope Neighborhood Center in Biddeford, Maine. From their website, https://www.seedsofhope4me.org/

At Seeds of Hope, we believe in the power of community and compassion. Our mission is to provide support, resources, and hope to those in need. Join us in making a difference, one seed at a time.

School Street Coffeehouse Fundraiser

School Street Coffeehouse is pleased to offer special edition stickers, donated by Thomas Clukey, as part of a $1 fundraiser.

Stickers will be available at Coffeehouse events, open mikes, and during Social Hour on Sundays. For those of you at a distance, stickers can be obtained by mail with a $1 donation and a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Every sticker purchased will support and give visability to the Coffeehouse, helping sustain this brand new tradition at UUCSB.

Hannaford Gift Cards

Would you like to donate to the church in a way that doesn’t cost you anything? If you buy your weekly groceries with a Hannaford gift card purchased from UUCSB, the church gets 5%. Our church depends on this fundraiser to contribute to its operating budget. Cards are available in $100 or $50 denominations. Gift cards are for sale in the Parish Hall every Sunday after the worship service. If you are worshiping virtually, just call or email Jane P. and make arrangements to pick them up at another time. Thank you for participating in this fundraiser in support of our church.

Please note: Each Friday, the current Friday Flyer posts at 9 AM and the previous week’s Flyer is archived. Rev. Lori’s weekly messages remain online in the form of reflections. You can find the archive here.
